  • Storyline: 6 months after the events depicted in The Matrix, Neo has proved to be a good omen for the free humans, as more and more humans are being freed from the matrix and brought to Zion, the one and only stronghold of the Resistance. Neo himself has discovered his superpowers including super speed, ability to see the codes of the things inside the matrix and a certain degree of pre-cognition. But a nasty piece of news hits the human resistance: 250,000 machine sentinels are digging to Zion and would reach them in 72 hours. As Zion prepares for the ultimate war, Neo, Morpheus and Trinity are advised by the Oracle to find the Keymaker who would help them reach the Source. Meanwhile Neos recurrent dreams depicting Trinitys death have got him worried and as if it was not enough, Agent Smith has somehow escaped deletion, has become more powerful than before and has fixed Neo as his next target. Review:

The thing that really strikes me about The Matrix Reloaded is that theincrease in quality, if it can be said that there actually is one, fromthefirst movie is more the result of an increased budget than anything else.Iloved the new movie, but the talent was there in the first one, you canjusttell that in the sequel the Wachowski brothers had a virtually endlessbudget, which allowed them to do pretty much anything they wanted. Theyhavea very distinct style that is clearly evident in all of their movies, evenif they are not laden with special effects. The fluidity of the cameramovement and the strangely dark tones of their films are only a couple ofthe techniques that make them recognizable. These things really come tothesurface if you watch the Matrix films, some of the most recognizable filmsever made, and then watch an earlier one of their movies, like the trashy1996 thriller, Bound.

That being said, I think it's safe to say that, despite the massive andseemingly unsurpassable genius of the first Matrix film, the Wachowskibrothers have made another step up from their last film. It should benotedthat the film is the second part in a trilogy, especially before groaningout loud at the sudden ending of the film, which built up and built up andbuilt up and then just stopped, just like the fist Lord of the Rings filmdid. I won't take time here to go into what the story is about and how itcontinues the story from the first film, if only because plot summary infilm reviews is a total waste of time for the writer as well as thereader, and also because I've only seen the movie twice, which really isn't enoughto get a total grasp on the depth of the plots, so I'll just suffice ithereto say that the startling complexity of the original Matrix (a complexitywhich is almost unheard of in a science fiction film) is added onto andexpanded in this film, although despite being hard to follow, is neverconfusing.

I've heard all kinds of talk about the Italian Job having an even bettercarchase than The Matrix Reloaded and how the chase in this film wasn't eventhat good at all, blah blah blah. There is a freeway chase scene in thisfilm which recklessly promotes reckless driving (and, even worse, recklessriding), but it is one of the most impressively made and fascinating carchase scenes that I've ever seen. It also contains the characteristicstyleof the Wachowski brothers, and is famously filmed on a freeway that wasconstructed strictly for the filming of this scene. I can't rememberwhere,Australia, I think. Anyway, Morpheus and one of the agents are having akung-fu fight on top of a semi trailer (which the driver never seems tonotice), the poor keymaker in struggling to stay out of the way, Trinityisflying between cars against traffic on one of the most badass motorcyclesonthe road (enter the Ducati commercial), and Morpheus is off doing, as theysay, `his superman thing.'

The superman thing is one of the elements of the movie that bordered onbeing campy, as the multitude of Agent Smiths comment to themselves, `He'sstill only human.' And then in the next scene he's flying. This is one ofthe points where you really need to keep in mind that Neo's body ispluggedinto a machine, in the strikingly less appealing real world, and isbasically playing a video game where he'll die in real life if killed inthegame because his body will think that it has been killed for real and willshut down.

During the freeway scene, there's a camera shot where the camera literallygoes right through the chassis' of a couple of semi trucks as it followsTrinity, which I think got the biggest reaction from an audience in asinglescene that I've seen since that Velociraptor jumped up at the ceiling inJurassic Park. One of the other most memorable scenes is the lengthy fightscene between Neo and the hordes of Agent Smiths, one of the mostentertaining fight scenes I've ever seen. It's obvious that the vastmajority of this scene is special effects (and not only because there arehundreds of the same guy in it), but it is so well made and convincing andeven amusing that the entertainment value of it is massive.

The new villains, by the way, are some of the best new villains since theReapers in Blade II. I've heard something about an albino interest groupthat's trying to sue for the way albino's are portrayed in this moviebecause of these guys, although I can't exactly agree that they're evenalbinos. These guys are so weird looking they're barely human. If thealbinointerest groups are trying to sue, why didn't they sue when Me, Myself, andIrene was released? Anyway, these guys have the interesting skill ofbecoming transparent and therefore untouchable, with the small conditionthat they are also unable to attack when in this defensive mode, whichmakesfor some great fight scenes as well as some cool tricks, like that ofhopping into rapidly approaching Escalades (oh, there are lots of Cadillaccommercials here, too). I heard recently that Cadillac is trying to aimfora younger audience than the much older people who tend to drive theircars, and if there were ever any doubts that the rumors are true, they arecompletely dispelled by their heavy placement in this movie.

There are certainly some scenes in this movie where it drags and seems toeven border on being unnecessarily philosophical and confusing, such as inthe extensive meeting with the Oracle, who tells Neo all about choicesthathe has made but doesn't know he's made yet, or needs to make even thoughfate has already determined what decision he would make, or something ofthat nature, where after a while we find ourselves (or at least I did)paying more attention to the pigeons walking around in this startlinglydifferent atmosphere than to the deep conversation that they're having.Maybe this is why it takes me more than two viewings to get the completestory of movies like this. Blasted pigeons.

There is a lot of controversy over the quality of The Matrix Reloaded, whichis to be expected, since it is a movie that has garnered such a vastamountof attention, even if only because it is the follow-up to such a massivelysuccessful film. But like Terminator 3, I personally was hugely impressedwith this sequel, and am more than able to accept it as a bridge betweentheoriginal and the final film in the series. It is the better part of threehours long, but goes by much faster than anticipated because it is so wellmade and entertaining. Never mind that totally campy scenes, like thebulletremoval scene and the dance club scene, because like so many other sequelsthese days (and unlike so many others), The Matrix Reloaded will leave youeager to see the next one.
