- Storyline: Of the many film versions of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, this 1949 MGM adaptation is by far the prettiest. Set in New England during the Civil War, the film relates the various adventures of the March sisters: Jo (June Allyson), Beth (Margaret O'Brien), Amy (Elizabeth Taylor) and Meg (Janet Leigh). Jo emerges as the main character, as she leaves hearth and home to try her luck as a novelist in New York. Moments of high comedy (the sisters' amateur theatricals) are counterpointed with grim tragedy (the death of the youngest March girl), with romantic interludes provided by the faithless Laurie (Peter Lawford) and the loyal Professor Bhaer (Rossano Brazzi). Unlike Selznick's 1933 Little Women or Gillian Armstrong's 1994 adaptation, this 1949 version tends to be more an extension of the old Hollywood contract-player typecasting system than a heartfelt evocation of the Alcott original. Even so, Little Women is consistently pleasing to the eye, especially when seen in its original Technicolor hues. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Download or Watch your favorite movies online. Numerous adaptations of Louisa May Alcott's novel have been put on filmor recorded. Most are enjoyable, from the earliest silent film movie tothe latest updated version. But no others can compare to this secondsound film and first in color, produced by MGM in 1949. Thefilmmakers got everything right in telling the story of "Little Women"in this film. The set, script, costumes, direction, cinematography, andactors are all superb.
The first talkie of "Little Women," was made by RKO in 1933, andstarred Katherine Hepburn. That film was mostly a star vehicle forHepburn, and didn't develop the story and characters as well as doesthis 1949 movie. In this film, several actors gave outstandingperformances beginning with June Allyson as Jo. Allyson never reachedthe level of Hepburn's stardom, but she was perfect in the role of thetomboyish Jo in "Little Women." She didn't have to force anything, butseemed natural in her handling of the role. An early scene "set thestage" and assured us of an entertaining film. Jo was returning homeand jumped over the fence only to slip and fall on her behind in thesnow. Then, as any determined boy would do, she got up, walked backaround the fence, and jumped it without falling the second time. Shewalked into the house with a big grin on her face.
The role of Marmee was played most beautifully by Mary Astor. No one inany other rendition of the story that I have seen comes close toimbuing the role with such heartfelt sincerity and love. MargaretO'Brien gives the most impassioned performance to her role as Beth inany of the films I've seen. Janet Leigh as Meg, and Elizabeth Taylor asAmy, gave more depth to their smaller roles than their counterpartshave in other films.
C. Aubrey Smith was the perfect character actor to cast as Mr.Laurence, and his performance was first rate. Lucille Watson handledthe role of Aunt March more adroitly and sternly than others have.Peter Lawford's quieter, subdued Laurie in the beginning was just rightas he began to flower through his friendship with Jo. Rossano Brazziwas very good as Professor Bhaer. The rest of the cast were just rightand filled out the story nicely.
This 1949 movie of "Little Women" is part of my library of great films. It makes for a most enjoyable evening at the movies at home with familyor friends. It will warm the hearts of young and old alike.
