In some roles he does go by on his film-star charm (Ocean's films) or sometimes plays with that image (Up in the Air) or is just plain goofy (work with the Coen brothers).
Things are no longer the same in Jack's world, though. For once in a long time I see a film that doesn't give everything away, or repeat itself. It's a work that asks to adjust your expectations for a dramatic thriller. Where the rest of this universe is dull and detached, she is startlingly vibrant. There are no wasted scenes and certainly no wasted dialogue. Watch this film if you like photography, you will love it. This is a masterpiece of realistic spy drama. This is not a typical action film as everyone would expect. This is a film with a European sensibility- it even has the director Anton Corbijn from the Netherlands- and is more about the internal conflict and his mechanical, cold nature than anything to do with a straightforward plot. All were helped by a superbly written screenplay adapted from a novel by Martin Booth.
The very thing that gave him a life now gives him a split second of hesitation that could cost him his life. Whether or not he's handsome or dreamy or whatever he is to women (and/or men) should be irrelevant to how he acts in the film. His character in this is similar to the character he portrayed in Syriana. Can he trust her? Can we? Again, I have to stress how this is the George Clooney show along with the director's. There is a lack of any human connection as he sleepwalks through his days. It doesn't have Ocean's Eleven megawatt smiles or an ounce of Clooney charisma. It sneaks up on the viewer and does exactly what it intended. Violante Placido was effective as his love interest. What is his name, Jack or Edward? Where does he come from? How did he get in this line of work? Figure it out for yourselves. There are two beautiful women but no erotic scenes and they fit in their characters very well. The plot is unclear, but it doesn't matter.
Forcing Jack to leave, he travels to Italy where he's told to lay low and wait for instructions. This film goes from a very slow pace, to an extremely fast up in your face pace. When he finally wants to live - as he has finally found something to live for - will it be too late? This film is a masterpiece in its deliberateness. It touches the parts of us that have given up hope, and shines a light on the side of us that still believes. The film dose not fit a release in 2010 at all. The question becomes: how human can this man be, can he connect with someone else? These are questions that don't usually fly in Hollywood fare, certainly not even in other big Clooney-vehicle spectacles like the Oceans films. Rowan Joffé's Screenplay deserves brownie points for being so Brave, to begin with. Cinematography, Editing & Art Design, are mentionable.Performance-Wise: As told before, George Clooney delivers of his most restrained & believable performances in here. Here we get the actor stretching himself into new (and excellenter) territory. Maybe too close. There is predictability in the narrative, but that's not what Corbijn and Clooney are going for.
You will most likely be bored for the first third of the film, but that is intentional. These two paces are examples of the life of this particular hit-man, it goes from buying a drink, to killing a shadow. He has stopped looking for his soul and is now just going through the motions. And very good. I must warn you however not to expect a happy ending as George Clooney's character does not survive. Anyone can take the old 'one last job' or 'don't fall in love or get close' kind of thing. I expect that this film will be remembered at Oscar time. film-watchers. This film for me deserves A lot more than the current reviews have given it, if you want to know more about the depth feel free to contact me and I will show you many points in the film that may seem mundane, but are actually the character building parts. Dialogues are short and to the point, very little background music, and lot of quietness to explain the scenes.
Even around his usually very naked and beautiful prostitute girlfriend, played by Violante Placido, he has to have a gun at the ready when he sees he has one. In fact just two years ago, on this precise weekend, one saw a lackluster action-packed equivalent, Bangkok Dangerous, come out with just a similar thing. If you have to ask what the point of this film is, then go watch Transformers II. Yeah, that's more like it.Another thing that makes Corbijn's work so appealing is his star, who is really George Clooney the "actor" this time. If however you are seeking a well made grown up film then you have to see this film. It's not about making an action-packed thriller (one critic putting the cheesy pun "Less Jason Bourne and more Jason Boring" is foolish to make that comparison), and if you need that this particular weekend of Labor Day then Robert Rodriguez's Machete should suffice with that. But one of these women grabs his attention through the sheer aliveness of her spirit. He has essentially given up hope. I will stop my ramble now, and say have a excellent day and thanks for reading.
