- Storyline: In ancient Egypt, high priest Imhotep started a forbidden relationship with Anck Su Namun, Pharaoh Seti's Mistress. When Seti finds out about what's going on, Imhotep and his loved one stab him, but can't escape the trustworthy guards: Anck Su Namnun chooses to commit suicide while Imhotep is bestowed with the Hom-Dai, the most feared curse of all: He is mummified alive in Hamunaptra, the city of the Dead. More than thirty-six centuries later, in 1923, to be exact, adventurer Rick leads Egyptologist Evelyn and her brother Johnathan to mysterious Hamunaptra. While Johnathan is keen on finding the legendary Egyptian treasures, Evelyn wants to search for the Book of the Living, which would clarify a lot in historical knowledge about the ancient Egyptians. Unfortunately, they and a rivaling group of careless American adventurers free Imhotep's mummy from his eternal prison. Now, with the ancient and quite agile high priest on the loose, the adventurers and scientists face not only a dangerous enemy, but also a massive threat to today's world: Imhotep wants to bring Ankh-su-namun back to life by using Evelyn's body, but he also wants to rid the world of the disbelieving crowd of democracy-supporters to be able to enforce his tyrannic dictatorship. First off, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but most of thelow ratings I am seeing are criticizing "The Mummy" because of it's"weak plot" or someone even said that this movie could have beenwritten by the person's dog!
Does anyone realize that there is different movie genres? If you go tosee "The Mummy" and expect to see "The Departed", "The Godfather", or"Shawshank Redemption" then yes, of course you will be disappointed.This is not a drama, it's an action/adventure movie!
Everyone has commented on the fun of this movie, that is what thismovie is all about. And, I think the story is very good, andinteresting. There is a lot to like here: it has elements of action,adventure, comedy, fantasy, mythology, horror, and tells a pretty wellmade tale (seriously, how many movies manage to pull all of thesethings off?). And, it manages to do all of this in style, with amazingspecial effects and action sequences. No, it's not perfect (what movieis?) but this movie kills most movies in the same genre! I have neverseen a movie that can contain so many different elements while stillbeing coherent. This movie is fairly a technical marvel!
Rachel Weisz is great, and looks beautiful as well playing as Evelyn.Yes, she is something like a "typical damsel in distress", but shebrings humor, intelligence, and a strong will to the part. It's hard tointegrate so many qualities into a believable character, but she doesit well.
Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell: After seeing him in so many goofymovies, playing an equally goofy character.. I thought he was alwaysgoing to be cast in lame movies such as "Encino Man" and "Monkeybones."He was the reason why I had doubts I would like the movie because Icould not picture him being more than a one dimensional person. Notonly does he fit the part with stride, but he nails every aspect of hischaracter: His is cool, yet has humor and he really surprised me withhow much depth he can add to a role that really doesn't need it! RickO'Connell wields his dual guns with flair, and I will never doubtFraser again! I just hope they keep him utilized more and more alikethis. I was really impressed with him.
Everyone else did their parts extremely well, they always stay incharacter, and add to the elements of the story.
This movie has a lot to offer, and lots of different ways to get yourinterest, especially if the Ancient Egyptian way fascinates you. Thismovie does have elements of horror: it will most likely scare youngerkids more than adults, but putting yourself in the characters placesyou would be quite freaked out!
Imhotep is very scary, mostly because of all the different abilities hepossesses, as well as forms he can take.
I could not recommend this movie enough, especially if you have a HDTVand have the High Definition version, you will be blown away! Justdon't expect a character driven drama, you're not looking for that withthis either!
