- Storyline: Captain Baron von Trapp is a widowed ex-naval officer with seven children who serve only to remind him of his deceased wife. The Von Trapp home is thus turned into a gloomy place of order and discipline, until the arrival of a new governess: Frauline Marie who is from a nearby Salzburg abbey. Marie shows the Von Trapp children the miracle of the Sound of Music, and teaches them how to sing. Captain von Trapp's heart opens up to feelings he had forgotten and he and Marie fall in love. Marie and Georg von Trapp are married, only to have their world brought down around them by the 1938 Anschluss of Austria, where Nazi Germany takes control of the country and demands that Captain von Trapp assume a position in the German Navy. "The Happiest sound in all the world"? Quite possibly and easily the mostfamous musical film in Hollywood history. Most of us grown-ups still love itbut at the same time we're also tired of seeing it over and over again(maybe that's why it's not rerun on NBC every single year anymore). JulieAndrews takes her MARY POPPINS success and adds even more to it with herdelightful rendition of the role that Mary Martin originated on the Broadwaystage in 1959 and ran even farther with it than Martin ever could. In myopinion, and I don't think I'm alone here, Martin was too old for the part(she was in her mid to late 40s in the stage version and Andrews was 30 whenthe transition came to film came around--a perfect age). As for the rest ofthe cast, it is just as talented: Christopher Plummer in the role he will beforever remembered for (even though he hated the part) is an achingly trueCap. Von Trapp with those "hidden talents" making subtle appearancesthroughout the film until blatantly bursting out into the open in the film'sclosing scenes; Richard Haydn makes for a comical and yet sincere "Uncle"Max, Peggy Wood is a starchy yet compassionate Reverand Mother and CharmianCarr as Liesl stands out as our perrenial favorite of the seven children.The locales are breathtaking as well (esp. the opening scenes which isprobably the most beautiful aerial shot in all of film history and thecunning floral designs of the public Austrian gardens during the DO-RE-MIsequence). So let's all keep watching this most cherished of all musicalfilms each year and never forget it's universal sentiment: to 'climb ev'rymountain, ford ev'ry stream, follow ev'ry rainbow till you find yourdream'.
